South Carolina

8/16/04-Sen. Scott Richardson, R-Hilton Head, is renewing his effort to allow South Carolina law enforcement officers to ticket drivers running red lights by using pictures taken with cameras on traffic signals.
Such cameras have been in use at three Charleston intersections for several years, but the city has no way to send enforceable citations to offending drivers.
Richardson plans to introduce a bill when lawmakers reconvene at the Capitol in January intended to clear the way for local governments to send out citations based on traffic cameras, The Associated Press reported.
He said the law is not an invasion of privacy because cameras already take pictures at nearly all ATMs, banks and convenience stores.
The fine for running a red light in South Carolina is $232.
