7/26/04-A bill failed passage earlier this year that would have required drivers in the state to have their headlights on for a longer period while driving at night.
HB1164, sponsored by Rep. Bill Thompson, D-Sioux Falls, was rejected by the House Transportation Committee in a 6-5 vote.
The bill called for drivers to flip on their lights at sunset and leave them on until sunrise. Current state law requires drivers to have their lights lit one half hour after sunset and one half hour before sunrise.
Anyone found in violation of the order would have faced a $200 fine and/or 30 days in jail.
