7/26/04-A bill that would have provided a weight tolerance for ice or snow buildup on large trucks failed passage earlier this year.
HB1236, sponsored by Rep. Lou Sebert, R-Mitchell, was rejected by the Senate Transportation Committee on a 4-3 vote. It previously passed the House 61-9.
The measure would have allowed motor carrier or law enforcement personnel to waive any overweight penalty on a tractor-trailer if it were determined ice or snow buildup were the cause of a weight violation. In order to be covered under the exemption, the weight of the tractor-trailer would need to be within 5 percent of the maximum allowed.
In addition, the driver would have been required to remove any ice or snow determined to be hazardous to highway traffic.
