6/30/04-Gov. Phil Bredesen signed a bill June 8 creating a Class C felony offense of identity theft trafficking. It takes effect July 1.
The new law, previously HB3403, declares that a victim of identity theft is also a crime victim, establishes a method for law enforcement to obtain records from a public or private entity in cases of identity theft, and sets standards for destruction of records maintained by a private entity that contains personal identifying information concerning a client.

5/27/04-A bill that would create a Class C felony offense of identity theft trafficking has been sent to Gov. Phil Bredesen.
HB3403, sponsored by Rep. Jere Hargrove, D-Cookeville, passed the House and Senate May 19 by unanimous consent.
The bill would declare that a victim of identity theft is also a crime victim, establish a method for law enforcement to obtain records from a public or private entity in cases of identity theft, and establish standards for destruction of records maintained by a private entity that contains personal identifying information concerning a client.

3/30/04-The House Judiciary Committee is reviewing a bill that would create a Class C felony offense of identity theft trafficking.
