6/8/05-A bill intended to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops has died.
HB168, sponsored by Rep. Joe Ford, D-Gadsden, was awaiting a final reading in the Senate when the session ended, effectively killing it for the year. It previously passed the House.
The bill would have required motorists to maintain a safe distance and reduce speed when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle by the road with their lights flashing.
The “Move Over” bill would have required drivers to merge into a lane furthest away from an emergency vehicle. On two-lane highways, drivers would have been required to reduce speed before passing the emergency vehicle.

5/3/05-The Senate Commerce, Transportation and Utilities Committee approved a bill April 27 intended to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops.
HB168, sponsored by Rep. Joe Ford, D-Gadsden, is awaiting approval before the full Senate before heading to Gov. Bob Riley. It has previously passed the House.
The bill would require motorists to maintain a safe distance and reduce speed when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle by the road with their lights flashing.
The “Move Over” bill would require drivers to merge into a lane furthest away from an emergency vehicle. On two-lane highways, drivers would be required to reduce speed before passing the emergency vehicle.

3/16/05-The House has unanimously approved a bill intended to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops.

The bill has been forwarded to the Senate for further consideration.
