7/25/05-A bill that sought to prohibit any state agency or department from revealing the Social Security number of any person on a document has died.
HB32, sponsored by Rep. Steve Hurst, D-Munford, remained in the House State Government Committee when the session ended, effectively killing it for the year.
It would have increased the obligations of certain state agencies that currently reveal or display the Social Security number of a person on agency documents.
The bill also would have prohibited any state department or agency from revealing or placing the Social Security number of a person on any document available for public inspection without the consent of the person. An exception would be made when the Social Security number is needed for a government purpose by a state or federal agency.
Under existing law, the Social Security number of a person may appear on certain documents that are available for public inspection.
