8/22/05-Gov. Bob Riley signed a bill into law earlier this month intended to help prevent identity theft. The Legislature gave its approval during its special session last month.
The new state law deletes the requirement that a Social Security number appear on the front of a commercial driver’s license obtained in the state. The restriction doesn’t apply to a regular driver’s license.
Commercial drivers can request a duplicate license, without the Social Security number.
The new law, previously HB7, also prohibits wreck reports from including a driver’s Social Security number.
To help prevent identity theft, authorities warn consumers should look out for their own interests by reading their credit card statements, reviewing their credit report once a year, and destroying unwanted credit card offers.
If you think you’ve been a victim of identity theft, you are encouraged to file a police report and a complaint with the state attorney general’s office.
