9/20/05-A bill that sought to require covers on loads of sand, gravel, rock debris “or any other type of loose or unpackaged material” on trucks with a gross weight in excess of 10,000 pounds has died.
HB2178, sponsored by Rep. Tom O’Halleran, R-Sedona, remained in committees when the session ended, effectively killing the bill for the year.
Violators could be fined up to $1,000. If an uncovered load were to cause an accident or injury to another motorist, the fine would be as much as $1,500. If an injury results in death, the truck’s driver would face a fine up to $2,500.
The bill exempted farm and forestry trucks from the proposed tarping rule.
