8/25/05-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders from both parties agreed this week to make easing California’s congested roads their first priority next year.
The Republican governor and the Legislature’s top four lawmakers met in Schwarzenegger’s office Aug. 24. They emerged from the meeting saying that they discussed how to work toward solving some of the state’s top problems next year, particularly transportation, The Associated Press reported.
Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, said lawmakers and the governor would work over the next several months to reach an agreement on legislation that would send more money to transportation.
Senate Minority Leader Dick Ackerman, R-Tustin, said there wasn’t enough time left in the remaining two weeks of the Legislature’s 2005 session to develop a transportation-funding plan.
Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, has been pushing a $7.7 billion bond measure to fix and improve the state’s roads, bridges and ports, but he told The AP he did not expect it would pass the Legislature this year.
