6/7/05-Gov. Bill Owens has vetoed a bill that would have required private tolling companies to obtain approval from the Colorado Department of Transportation before moving forward with plans for a 210-mile private toll road – dubbed the Super Slab – on the plains of the Front Range.
HB1342 would have narrowed the width of the proposed corridor as well as required corporations to notify all landowners whose property might be affected. In addition, it required approval from the commissioners in all seven counties where the road passes.
Owens said in his veto letter to lawmakers that HB1342, along with another vetoed bill – SB230 – are “far too broad and sweeping” in their effort to control how land can be acquired for building private roadways.
“Private investment in Colorado’s transportation infrastructure is needed now more than ever,” he said. The governor said funding for the state Transportation Department next year is expected to be 40 percent below what it was in 2002.
