5/25/05-A bill has died that would have required drivers to keep their hands off the phone while driving.
However, a similar bill – HB6722 – remains active.
HB6584, sponsored by Rep. Richard Roy, D-Milford, remained in the Joint Transportation Committee past the deadline for bills to gain passage from the committee.
Under the bill, talking on a phone equipped with a “hands-free” device would still have been permitted.
The bill would also have prohibited drivers from using handheld e-mail devices while driving.
A driver stopped for using either device could have been fined up to $75. It would have exempted emergency calls.
