10/25/05-Connecticut’s attorney general is pushing lawmakers to toughen that state’s insurance laws following a deadly truck crash in July that killed four people.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal called for the changes after an investigation into American Crushing and Recycling found that the company’s truck was allegedly uninsured at the time of the accident, a charge the company’s owner, David Wilcox, denies.
The New Haven Register reported that Blumenthal wants to make the operation of uninsured commercial vehicles a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.
Under current regulations, the crime is only a misdemeanor with a penalty of up to three months in prison and fines of up to $500.
The state’s General Assembly was expected to take up the issue of trucking insurance reform during a special legislative session Tuesday, Oct. 25.
The Register said that legislators are also considering requiring insurance companies to immediately notify the state when a trucking company’s coverage is cancelled or lapses. A similar rule is already in effect for private motor vehicles.
