5/25/05-A bill that would have allowed police to pull over drivers for not wearing their seat belts has died.
HB3, sponsored by Rep. Irv Slosberg, D-Boca Raton, was waiting to go before the full Senate for consideration when the session ended May 6, effectively killing it for the year. It previously passed the House.
Under a 1986 state law, police can ticket drivers for not buckling up only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding or a bad taillight.
The bill would have fined violators from $68.50 to $74.50.
A similar Senate bill – S216 – met the same fate.
