5/25/05-A bill that would have allowed police to pull over drivers for not wearing their seat belts has died.
S216, sponsored by Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, failed to come up for consideration in the House prior to the session ending on May 6, effectively killing it for the year. It previously passed the Senate.
Under a 1986 state law, police can ticket drivers for not buckling up only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding or a bad taillight.
The bill would have fined violators from $68.50 to $74.50.
A similar House bill – HB3 – met the same fate.
