11/14/05-The House voted 78-27 to approve a bill that would prohibit drivers under age 18 from talking on cell phones while behind the wheel.
HB5133, sponsored by Rep. David Law, R-Commerce Township, would allow police to pull over young drivers and impose a $50 fine for chatting on the phone while driving. The bill exempts emergency phone calls.
It originally banned hand-held devices only, but it was revised to prohibit all interactive wireless communication devices, including “hands-free” devices.
The bill has moved to the Senate for further consideration. For bill status, call (517) 373-0630.
