5/20/05-A bill that would have established an annual indexing adjustment for the state’s motor fuel tax beginning in 2005 has died.
SB101, sponsored by Sen. Jon Dolan, R-St. Charles, remained in the Senate Transportation Committee at the close of the session May 13, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have allowed the director of the Missouri Department of Revenue to calculate the adjusted rate by multiplying the current motor fuel tax rate by an inflation index on Feb. 15 of each year.
The inflation index is the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the calendar year ending on Dec. 31 immediately preceding the calculation date divided by the CPI for the prior calendar year. The adjusted rate must be rounded to the nearest one-tenth of a cent.
Under the bill, the adjusted rate would have become effective on July 1 following the calculation.
