3/7/05-A bill that would have raised the minimum coverage requirement for drivers in the state who have vehicle insurance has died.
SB2328, sponsored by Sen. Bennie Turner, D-West Point, remained in the House Insurance Committee at the deadline for Senate bills to pass from a House committee, effectively killing it for the year. The bill passed the Senate Feb. 3.
Current law requires drivers to have $10,000 for bodily injury, $20,000 for personal injury and $5,000 for property damage.
The bill would have increased the amounts required to $25,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 for personal injury. The bill suggested $20,000 for property damage.
The changes would have applied only to policies issued after the bill takes effect.
But, a similar House bill – HB722 – is likely headed to Gov. Haley Barbour for approval.
