7/6/05-Sen. Joel Johnson of Kearney is promoting a plan for a new four-lane highway that would link the northeast and southwest corners of the state.
Dubbed the “Snowbird Trail,” Johnson said the highway could ultimately connect Minneapolis and Chicago with the southwestern United States.
Johnson told The Associated Press the highway could take advantage of road building planned or already complete in Iowa and Minnesota. Three four-lane highways now lead out of Sioux City, IA, while Minnesota is developing a four-lane route into Minneapolis-St. Paul.
In Nebraska, Johnson’s idea would depend on a four-lane highway being built between South Sioux City, Wayne and Norfolk.
Johnson is hopeful his idea will ultimately become a priority of the Nebraska Department of Roads.
