12/5/05-A bill in the Assembly Transportation Committee would increase the fine for fuel wholesalers found to be gouging.
A4579, sponsored by Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, would increase the fine for increasing the price of fuel more than once in a 24-hour period to as much as $5,000 for a first offense. Subsequent offenses could result in a $10,000 fine.
Existing New Jersey law allows the state to fine gougers $50 to $200 per occurrence.
