7/14/05-Gov. Kenny Guinn has signed a bill – AB572 – to use some of the state’s surplus funds to give residents rebates on their vehicle registrations. A Senate amendment, however, excluded semis and their trailers from the final version.
The minimum rebate that residents and businesses with vehicles as much as 26,000 pounds would receive on their vehicle registration fees is $75. The maximum return is $275 per vehicle. Lawmakers added a provision for people 65 years or older who don’t drive but have state ID to apply for a $75 rebate.
Although truckers got the shaft for rebates on their commercial vehicles, their cars, pickups, SUVs or motorcycles are eligible – as long as they don’t owe the Department of Motor Vehicles any money.
The state will begin distributing $300 million in rebates – 2.1 million checks – in September.

Under the rebate agreement reached in the Legislature’s final hours before adjournment, the minimum rebate that residents and businesses would receive on their vehicle registration fees would be $75. The maximum return would be $275 per vehicle.
An additional compromise with allows people over 65 years old who don’t drive but have state identification to apply for a $75 rebate.
