10/13/05-Nevada’s Transportation Board has approved a record $1.087 billion statewide road construction and maintenance program for the 2005-06 fiscal year.
Projects on the list endorsed by the board, chaired by Gov. Kenny Guinn, include:

  • Continued freeway work between Reno and Carson City; and
  • Widening several miles of Interstate 15 in Las Vegas, from the Spaghetti Bowl at I-515 and U.S. 95 to Craig Road. The road will be widened to 10 lanes. It now has six lanes.

The Las Vegas area will receive $510.8 million, or 47 percent, of the project funding while the Reno-Sparks area will get $318.7 million, or 29 percent, The Associated Press reported. Non-urban areas of the state, which have a lot of major highways, including I-80, will claim the remaining $257.6 million, or 24 percent.
About three-quarters of the total funding is designated for new roads while the rest is for upkeep and other projects, such as landscaping and sound walls.
The statewide spending plan for 2005-06 is nearly 17 percent higher than the $933 million approved for the 2003-04 fiscal year. The new fiscal year started Oct. 1.
