7/18/05-Gov. George Pataki signed a bill into law last week intended to keep construction workers safe.
Under the new rule, drivers convicted of two or more speeding violations in a work zone would have their licenses suspended for 60 days.
Speeding tickets in work zones will come with a $50 surcharge. The money will be used for a public education campaign about the dangers of exceeding the speed limit in work zones.
The new law, previously S4885, also requires a police presence in major work zones.
It takes effect in January.

6/29/05-Assembly lawmakers approved a bill that would suspend for 60 days the licenses of drivers convicted of two or more speeding violations in a work zone.
S4885, which previously passed the Senate, now heads to Gov. George Pataki’s desk.
Sponsored by Sen. Thomas Libous, R-Binghamton, the bill also would require a police presence in major work zones and create a public education program. The program would be paid for with the help of a $50 surcharge on all speeding violations in work zones.
