3/11/05-The House has approved a bill that would allow law enforcement officials in the state to instantly determine if a vehicle has insurance.
HB1351, sponsored by Rep. John Wright, R-Broken Arrow, would require insurance polices to include the vehicle identification number of the vehicle or vehicles covered by a policy for use in a state database.
It would direct the state Department of Public Safety to establish a secure Web site maintaining a directory of vehicle identification numbers that will be accessible to insurance carriers and law enforcement for verification of coverage.
The database would cost more than $50,000 to get up and running.
The measure has been forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
