10/19/05-A bill in the House Transportation Committee would require motorists to maintain a safe distance and reduce speed when approaching stationary emergency vehicles on or within 12 feet of the road with their lights flashing.
The measure, dubbed the “Move Over” bill, is designed to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops.
Sponsored by Rep. Teresa Forcier, R-Titusville, HB526 would require drivers to merge into a lane further away from an emergency vehicle. On two-lane highways, drivers would be required to reduce speed before passing the emergency vehicle.
Failure to obey the rule could result in a fine up to $300.
If a violation results in an accident, the offender could lose their license for between 90 days and one year.
