6/27/05-HB2573 didn’t become law, but a similar bill – SB1670 – was signed by Gov. Rick Perry June 17.
4/29/05-The House Transportation Committee approved a bill that would establish a motor vehicle responsibility program to reduce the number of uninsured motorists on Texas roads. It now moves to the full House for consideration.
HB2573, sponsored by Rep. Bill Callegari, R-Katy, would allow the Department of Public Safety to verify car owners’ continual insurance coverage, while still maintaining their privacy.
Although Texas law already requires all drivers to carry auto insurance policies, Callegari said in a press release that one in five Texas drivers is driving uninsured. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, uninsured motorists cost Texas drivers approximately $861 million in premiums.
