3/9/05-Gov. Jon Huntsman on March 8 signed a bill – SB227 – into law to take driver’s licenses away from undocumented immigrants and issue them a driving “privilege” card instead.
The card cannot be used as identification to register to vote, board a plane, open a bank account or obtain a driver’s license in another state. The new law, effective immediately, requires the card to be renewed annually and will be a different color than Utah’s regular blue driver’s license.
It will read, “For driving privileges only – not valid for identification.”
Utah residents without a Social Security number will not be able to get a driver’s license or an identification card. Drivers licenses already possessed by undocumented immigrants must be surrendered on the drivers’ birthdays or on July 1, whichever comes first.
3/7/05-The House voted on March 1 to take driver’s licenses away from people who cannot prove they are legal residents and issue them a driving “privilege” card instead.
SB227, which previously passed the Senate, now heads to Gov. Jon Huntsman.
The card could not be used as identification to board a plane, open a bank account or obtain a driver’s license in another state. It would have to be renewed annually and would be a different color than Utah’s regular blue driver’s license.
It would read, “For driving privileges only – not valid for identification.”
If signed into law, Utah residents without a Social Security number would not be able to get a driver’s license or an identification card. State-issued identification cards would expire July 1, and driver’s licenses on a holder’s birthday after July 1.
