2/18/05-The House Transportation Committee voted 13-7 on Feb. 3 to kill a bill that sought to allow state police to place retired patrol cars in the median of I-81 to deter speeders.
Under HB2608, sponsored by Delegate Ben Cline, R-Amherst, “Whenever any law-enforcement vehicle is permanently taken out of service by the Department of State Police or any local law-enforcement agency in the Commonwealth, such vehicle shall be placed at a conspicuous location within a highway median in order to deter violations of motor vehicle laws at that location. Such vehicles … shall be rotated from one location to another as needed to maintain their deterrent effect. The provisions of this act shall not apply to unmarked law-enforcement vehicles that cannot, because of their lack of emblems and other markings, be readily identified as law-enforcement vehicles.”
