2/18/05-The House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee voted 15-6 on Feb. 18 to kill a bill that sought to add Roanoke City to the list of localities authorized to have a “photo-red” traffic light signal enforcement program.
SB721, sponsored by Sen. Sen. John Edwards, D-Roanoke, also called to eliminate the July 1, 2005 “sunset” for “photo-red” programs and provided that a contract between a locality and a private entity could not include provisions for the payment or compensation to the private entity based on the number of violations, or as a percentage of revenue generated as the result of the violations detected by use of the photo-monitoring equipment.
The bill passed the Senate in January.
