4/14/05-A bill has died that would have given cash-strapped cities and counties tools for raising taxes to fix local roads and bridges.
HB1989, sponsored by Rep. Dave Upthegrove, D-Des Moines, remained in the House Transportation Committee past the March 16 deadline for bills to move from the chamber.
Under the bill, cities and counties would have been able to impose a local vehicle license fee, a vehicle weight fee and street utility fees.
In addition, counties could levy a local fuel tax if approved by voters of that county.
