10/26/05-A bill in the Assembly Committee on Judiciary would go after price gougers.
AB786, sponsored by Assemblyman Josh Zepnick, D-Milwaukee, would prohibit wholesalers and retailers from charging excessive prices for consumer goods and services, such as food, medicine, and gasoline and diesel fuel.
The bill targets prices that grossly exceed the amount charged for similar goods and services, or that greatly exceed the average price charged within the past year. It would permit the Wisconsin Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute retailers or others in the distribution chain that take advantage of consumers.
Anyone found in violation would face fines up to $10,000, per occurrence.

An identical Senate bill – SB373 – is in the Senate Committee on Job Creation, Economic Development and Consumer Affairs.
