10/24/05-A bill in the Senate Natural Resources and Transportation Committee would end automatic indexing of the state’s fuel tax.
SB330, sponsored by Sen. Tom Reynolds, R-West Allis, would require lawmakers to annually vote on any tax changes.
The automatic increase in the tax has been adjusted for inflation on April 1 each year since 1985. This year, the tax increased 0.8 cents a gallon.
Under the bill, if the motor vehicle fuel tax is no longer annually adjusted, annually, beginning in 2007, an amount from the sales and use taxes imposed on the sale of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and service will be deposited into the transportation fund.
That amount is equal to the difference between the amount of motor vehicle fuel taxes that would have been generated in the current fiscal year if the annual adjustment of the motor vehicle fuel tax was in effect and the amount of the motor vehicle fuel taxes actually generated in the current fiscal year.
