10/12/05-Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, has introduced a bill that would go after price gougers.
SB373 would prohibit wholesalers and retailers from charging excessive prices for consumer goods and services, such as food, medicine, and gasoline and diesel fuel.
The bill targets prices that grossly exceed the amount charged for similar goods and services, or that greatly exceed the average price charged within the past year. It would permit the Wisconsin Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute retailers or others in the distribution chain that take advantage of consumers.
Anyone found in violation would face fines up to $10,000, per occurrence.
It is in the Senate Committee on Job Creation, Economic Development and Consumer Affairs.
