5/15/06-With the price at the pump in Alabama pushing $3 per gallon, a state Democratic lawmaker is proposing a little relief for consumers.
Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, told The Associated Press he has requested that Gov. Bob Riley get involved.
Holmes wants the Republican governor to open a special session in Montgomery so lawmakers can discuss a possible repeal of the state’s fuel excise tax. In addition, concerns about reports of fuel price gouging in the state has led him to ask Riley to issue an executive order declaring a state of emergency.
Nothing has been done and lawmakers also have failed to respond to the crisis, Holmes told The AP. How a tax break or suspension would affect the status of the International Fuel Tax Agreement in Alabama is uncertain.
A spokesman in Riley’s office said that eliminating the fuel tax is not on the governor’s agenda.
