6/6/06-Gov. Janet Napolitano has signed a bill into law that requires companies to notify people affected by any breaches in security of unencrypted sensitive personal information. It also applies to government agencies.
The new law, previously SB1338, covers information identifying people’s driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, credit cards and financial accounts.
Violators will face up to a $10,000 fine for each individual who does not get proper notification. They also will be subject to civil proceedings.

3/7/06-Senators voted 21-7 March 1 to advance a bill that would require companies to notify people affected by any breaches in security. It also applies to government agencies.
Sponsored by Sen. John Huppenthal, R-Chandler, SB1338 would cover information identifying people’s driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, credit cards and financial accounts.
Violators would face up to a $10,000 fine for each individual who did not get proper notification.
The bill now heads to the House.
