9/26/06-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have allowed voters to make the final decision on vehicle fee increases.
Sponsored by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, AB799 would have authorized San Francisco to put a measure on the ballot to impose a local vehicle license fee.
Revenue generated from the fee would have been about $75 million annually, according to an analysis on the bill.
Schwarzenegger said in his veto message on the bill that one of the reasons he rejected the bill was because revenues “would not be directed to projects related to vehicles but used to bolster the city’s general fund.”
