8/29/06-A bill – SB1160 – that would have allowed illegal immigrants to obtain a license that could be used only for driving has died. However, a very similar bill – SB1162 – has been sent to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

6/28/06-The Assembly Transportation Committee voted 7-5 to approve a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain a license that could be used only for driving. The Senate already approved it.
Sponsored by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, SB1160 would create special driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants that look different than licenses for citizens and legal aliens. The version for illegal immigrants would not be valid for identification or purposes other than driving.
The bill has been sent to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
