8/30/06-A bill has died that would have increased the penalties for the theft and trafficking of personal identifying information of 10 or more individuals. Violators would have faced as much as three years in prison.
California law now limits charges for possessing and trafficking in identifying information to a misdemeanor, regardless of the number of identities stolen.
Sponsored by Sen. Chuck Poochigian, R-Fresno, SB1387 remained in the Assembly Appropriations Committee at the Aug. 24 deadline to advance to the full chamber for consideration. The Senate previously approved the bill.

8/15/06-The Assembly Committee on Public Safety approved a bill that would increase the penalties for the theft and trafficking of personal identifying information of 10 or more individuals.
California law now limits charges for possessing and trafficking in identifying information to a misdemeanor, regardless of the number of identities stolen.
Under SB1387, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Poochigian, R-Fresno, violators would face as much as three years in prison.
The bill has been forwarded to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration. For bill status, call (916) 651-4120.
