3/9/06-The Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee voted 4-2 to kill a bill that sought to clarify that owner-operators are not required to purchase workers’ compensation coverage.
The measure was in response to a recent court ruling that called into question whether Colorado-based independent contactors in trucking are exempt from the state’s requirement that they purchase workers’ compensation coverage.
SB191, sponsored by Sen. Jennifer Veiga, D-Denver, was intended to clarify that owner-operators shouldn’t be treated differently than any other independent contractor in the state and be required to have workers’ compensation coverage.
