5/23/06-Rep. Kevin Witkos, R-Canton, wants to temporarily repeal the state’s per-gallon tax on diesel and gasoline for the summer – from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
“This may allow truckers to actually stop in the state of Connecticut rather than just passing through. Maybe they’ll buy a sandwich, maybe they’ll buy groceries, I mean, this just isn’t all about (fuel),” Witkos told WTNH-TV in Hartford.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she would consider a legislative effort to suspend the state’s 26-cent-per-gallon diesel tax and 25-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax. A special session would need to be called for lawmakers to address it.
Rell said a three-month tax holiday would cost the state $125 million in lost revenue.
“To take that money out, even for a short period of time, we’d have to make up that revenue somewhere because our bonds, the money that we borrow to pay for transportation needs, counts on that revenue to pay for those bonds,” she told the television station.
