4/17/06-A bill has died that would have required 2 percent of the fuel used in school districts throughout the state to be a biodiesel blend.
SB453, sponsored by Sen. Brian Kemp, R-Athens, passed the House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee but never came up before the full House. It passed the Senate 52-4 in February.
The bill would have required at least 2 percent of the fuel used in all local school buses and other school district vehicles to be biodiesel by 2010.
School systems in areas where biodiesel is unavailable would have been exempt from the measure. School systems would also have been exempt if the cost of the fuel was more than 5 percent higher than the cost of regular diesel fuel.
