5/23/06-A bill died in the House Transportation Committee that would have permitted police to pull over drivers who are not buckled up.
Existing state law prohibits law enforcement officers to stop drivers solely for not wearing seat belts. To issue seat-belt citations, drivers must be stopped for another traffic violation, such as speeding.
HB106, sponsored by Rep. Rob Wilkey, D-Scottsville, would have prohibited points from being assessed against the driver’s license.
A similar House bill – HB86 – also died.
