6/20/06-Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed a bill into law June 8 that allows the state to partner with private groups to build toll roads and bridges. It takes effect Aug. 15.
The new law, previously HB1294, authorizes the Louisiana Transportation Authority to work out details with private groups to build roads, bridges or expand an existing facility. The private business would keep toll revenue in exchange for upkeep.
Any state project proposed by a private contractor would go before the House and Senate transportation panels for a review hearing. However, lawmakers couldn’t reject proposed deals.
5/26/06-The Senate unanimously approved a bill Thursday, May 25, that would allow the state to partner with private groups to build toll roads and bridges.
Sponsored by Rep. Roy Quezaire, D-Donaldsonville, HB1294 now heads to Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s desk for her signature. The House approved the bill 98-3 May 10.

5/8/06-The House Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee voted May 1 to approve a bill that would allow the state to partner with private groups to build toll roads and bridges.
Sponsored by Rep. Roy Quezaire, D-Donaldsonville, HB1294 initially applied to projects, dubbed “megaprojects,” costing at least $250 million. However, the threshold was withdrawn in committee.
The bill would authorize the Louisiana Transportation Authority to work out details with private groups to build roads, bridges or expand an existing facility. The private business would keep toll revenue in exchange for upkeep.
