12/15/06-The Senate has approved a bill that would exempt trucks delivering heating fuel from seasonal weight restrictions during the time of year when loads are subject to freeze and thaw cycles.
Sponsored by Rep. Jerry Kooiman, R-Grand Rapids, HB5637 now heads to Gov. Jennifer Granholm's desk. House lawmakers previously approved it.
The bill would offer a weight exemption for vehicles hauling heating fuel during the months of March, April and May. It also would provide for an annual permit for the delivery of heating fuel and public utility work in non-emergency situations.
Existing state law exempts from the restriction vehicles transporting agricultural commodities. The exception also applies to public utility vehicles on highways, roads or streets under the jurisdiction of local road agencies as long as the county road commission is notified at least 48 hours in advance and issues a permit, according to an analysis of the bill.
The annual permit being offered in the bill would cost up to $100 per vehicle.
