6/23/06-A bill that would have suspended the state’s 20-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline-based fuels for six months has died. The same tax on diesel would have remained intact.
Sponsored by Sen. Brian LeClair, R-Woodbury, SF3807 remained in the Senate Taxes Committee when the session ended, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have invoked a gas tax holiday from July 1 to the end of the year. Such a tax break would have cost the state about $317 million in revenue for road work.
Fuel tax revenues are sent to the state’s highway user trust fund, which pay for road work. The bill would have tapped a state account that collects surplus dollars for tax relief to replenish the highway fund.
A companion bill – HF4186 – met the same fate.
