2/7/06-Gov. Haley Barbour signed a bill Feb. 7 to make failure to wear a seat belt a primary offense.
The Legislature passed a bill – HB409 – late last month that would allow police to pull over drivers if they, a front-seat passenger or any child under age 8 anywhere in the vehicle is not strapped in.
Currently, police can issue seat-belt citations to drivers only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding.
Violators would face a $25 fine – the same as current state law.
The stricter rule will take effect on May 27, the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend.

1/18/06-The House approved a bill 92-25 Jan. 12 that would permit police to pull over drivers in the state who are not buckled up.
Currently, police can issue seat-belt citations to drivers only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding.
Sponsored by Rep. Bryant Clark, D-Pickens, HB409 would fine violators $25 – the same as existing state law. It would apply to drivers and front-seat passengers. No points would be assessed against a driver’s license.
