3/8/06-A bill has died that would have permitted police to pull over drivers in the state who are not buckled up.
HB56 remained in the House Transportation Committee at the deadline for House bills to advance to the full House.
A similar House bill – HB409 – however, was signed into law Feb. 7.
1/9/06-A bill in the House Transportation Committee would permit police to pull over drivers in the state who are not buckled up.
Currently, police can issue seat-belt citations to drivers only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding.
HB56, sponsored by Rep. John Mayo, D-Clarksdale, would fine violators $25 – the same as existing state law. No points would be assessed against a driver’s license.

A similar bill – SB2086 – has passed the Senate and advanced to the House.
