1/9/06-The Senate has approved a bill that would permit police to pull over drivers in the state who are not buckled up.
Currently, police can issue seat-belt citations to drivers only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding.
SB2086 now heads to the state’s House for further consideration.
The bill would apply to drivers and any passengers, and it would double the fine to $50.
Sponsored by Sen. Gray Tollison, D-Oxford, the bill would apply to drivers and any passengers. Violators would face a $50 – twice the existing amount. No points would be assessed against a driver’s license.
