11/21/06-The Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee has approved a bill that would make it illegal for creditors to deny credit to people solely because they were a victim of identity theft.
Violators would face penalties of $5,000 for every proven incident of credit denial to a victim of identity theft.
S1643 now heads to the full Assembly for further consideration. If approved there, it would head to Gov. Jon Corzine’s desk. The Senate unanimously approved the bill this summer.
