8/7/06-Gov. Bob Taft has signed a measure that gives grant money to fueling stations willing to install alternative fuel pumps. It also requires the state to buy more of the fuel, and mandates the state purchase flex fuel vehicles only.
By January 2007, the state is required to use at least one million gallons of biodiesel in state vehicles, with annual increases of 100,000 gallons. Biodiesel contains at least 5 percent diesel fuel derived from crops.
In addition, at least 60,000 gallons of E85 – a fuel blend that is 85 percent ethanol – must be used by state vehicles by Jan. 1, with an increase of 5,000 gallons per year afterward. The state fleet now uses 30,000 gallons annually.
The new law, previously HB245, takes effect in October.
