4/28/06-A bill has died that was intended to help prevent the unwanted opening of an account or the obtaining of credit in a person’s name.
Sponsored by Rep. Jerry McPeak, D-Warner, HB2782 failed to advance from the House prior to a deadline.
The bill would have allowed consumers in Oklahoma to place security “freezes” on their credit information. Once the freeze was in place, consumer reporting agencies would have been required to notify consumers anytime a third party attempts to access credit reports.
Consumers would not have been charged to have a freeze placed on their credit reports. Once consumers rescind the freeze, they would have been required to pay up to $10 for a second and subsequent request.
The measure also would have required that if a security breach occurs, a notice would have been sent to the individual whose personal information may have been stolen.
A similar House bill – HB2761 – also died.
